The world of recruiting and interviewing is changing fast.

.

Interviewing has changed along with many other aspects of our daily lives - almost overnight. For most companies, the global pandemic has moved to online interviewing, and many job seekers may not be prepared for a significant shift in how to represent themselves on camera.

Interviewing online is similar to in-person interviewing, but there are several additional aspects of online interviewing that demand new skills if you want to stand out in the crowded interview field.

You can shine on an video interview. However you must prepare and not think you can just "wing" it.

Soft Skills are the most underrated aspect of

Online Interviewing success

Interviewing on camera causes many to feel unsure of themselves and how they come across to the interviewer. And while it's true that some of the cues you use to determine your effectiveness during an in-person interview are lost when you are virtual, there are some things you can do to improve your impact and help put you at ease. Here are some of the areas that I focus on during "Online Interview Coaching":

Your Image

Choosing the right clothes for your online interview is extremely important. Bright tones look best. Avoid large patterns or tiny patterns that look like "movement" when viewing them on camera. For women, makeup will help enhance your image a bit. For men, a bit of face powder will help avoid an unpleasant shine on the face.

The Background

Work to ensure that your background is professional. The best option is to use a bare wall with minimal items that will appear on the screen. This works best to help you avoid distractions during the interview. The second option is to use a virtual background. Just be aware of pixelation that can distort the image seen by the interviewer.

Equipment & Technology

Ensure that you have tested your computer and the technology that you will be using during the interview. There are a number of options that a company may opt to use during your interview. If you are not familiar with the technology, ask if you can do a trial run to ensure that all goes well during the interview.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of a video interview and often one of the most overlooked items when preparing for an online interview. It is vitally important that you are seen in the best possible light by the interviewer. Remember, you are being evaluated on many aspects during an interview, including your ability to appear well on camera.
